CONSENT-BASED BODYWORK
FOR YOUR BELOVED EQUINE PARTNER
What is Bodywork?
Simply stated, bodywork refers to any hands-on method of initiating change and healing in the body.
I cannot force a body to change or heal itself, just as you cannot force the horse’s body to relax under saddle. What I can do is initiate a conversation with the nervous system. Bodywork is an invitation to shift into a healing state, known as the parasympathetic–or “rest and digest”–nervous system.
So, how do I invite the body to shift into a healing state? Through a blend of modalities primarily focused on communicating with and releasing restrictions in the body’s vast fascial network. Fascia encompasses every muscle, tendon, ligament, bone, organ and blood vessel in the body. (And that’s just scratching the surface of its many, many roles.) The modalities I currently use are Equi-Bow, CranioSacral, Feldenkrais, kinesiology tape and an innate knowing I call Intuitive Touch.
Truly, I go where the horse shows me my presence is needed. And it’s not always where my analytical mind thinks my hands should go. The intuitive side of bodywork can be thought of as the artistic application of science-based modalities. You could also think of it as akin to the “feel” aspect of riding.
What are the Benefits of Bodywork?
+ Improved balance and overall comfort within the body
+ Increased ability to shift between the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems, resulting in a more relaxed and balanced horse physically, mentally and emotionally, as well as improved functionality of the body’s cardiovascular, lymphatic, digestive and respiratory systems
+ Supports the optimal functionality of the body’s musculoskeletal systems, including fascia, muscles, tendons, ligaments and proper joint articulation
+ Increased ability to perform his/her job more efficiently, at a higher level of potential and with more biomechanical correctness
+ Support for horses who are on stall rest, recovering from injuries, in an acute traumatic health episode or are suffering from chronic or long-term health issues and injuries
+ A clearer insight into how apply a whole horse approach in support of his/her long-term soundness, overall health and well-being
+ A happier, healthier and more willing equine partner
+ Plus SO much more!

What is Consent-Based Bodywork?
It is important that you know I only practice bodywork if your horse gives me permission to do so. There are many reasons for this, including my personal ethics around holding respect for your horse as a sentient and sovereign being whose voice deserves to be heard and whose choices deserve to be honoured.
From a practical healing standpoint, consent is necessary because I need the horse’s mind and body to be on board with the healing process. Bodywork practitioners don’t do the healing; the body heals itself. Bodyworkers are really catalysts for that healing, but the body cannot be forced to heal. So if I don’t have the horse’s consent to work with the body, very little healing will take place. And the healing that does begin often doesn’t hold long term.
Also, after working with countless horses who have been labeled as highly sensitive, reactive or dangerous, I have learned that my consent-based approach has made the difference in allowing these horses to feel safe enough to not only receive bodywork, but have some of the fastest and most profound healing journeys. These horses are often holding the most discomfort in their bodies and so when they realize that I am there to work with them, that I won’t push them beyond their threshold and their bodies can relax and receive the work, they usually end up becoming bodywork junkies!
And this is why Equi-Bow can have such positive impacts for a horse’s physical, mental and emotional well-being. Because a body that is comfortable and functioning as it was designed is a happier, healthier, more vibrant horse who is also more capable of performing their job, whether that’s a weekly hack, grand prix competition, working cattle, equine-assisted therapy or anything in between.
Why Work with Me?
The absolute most important aspect of this work for me–other than helping your horse become more balanced–is empowering you.
Why?
Because you are your horse’s primary advocate. You are their voice and guardian. And you are the one who knows your horse best. Which means you need to be armed with information so you can stand in your authority and make the best decisions possible on your horse’s behalf.
And so our journey will be filled with education. I will teach you the skills you need to really see your horse. You will learn how to decipher what s/he is communicating to you through the language of behaviour and what your horse’s physical body shows us. You will begin to see your horse through myriad lenses and uncover a larger picture of who s/he is. This process is the foundation of building a relationship with your horse that is rooted in a deep level of trust.
You can also count on me to be a fierce advocate for both you and your horse. But that will sometimes require me to be deeply honest in ways that may not be easy to hear. And while you may experience discomfort at times, you will not be alone.
When you work with me you will have my support as you move through any challenges that may arise. And while you may lean on me for guidance, ultimately, you are in the driver’s seat. Every decision will be made by you based on what you learn is in the highest and best interests of both you and your horse.
